Dr Corlie Giliomee is a senior lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Criminology at the University of Pretoria, where she has been working for the last sixteen years. Prior to her employment at the university, she worked in various areas in the field of social work for 15 years. She has experience as a practice lecturer and taught social development on undergraduate level for 11 years and post graduate level for two years. Currently she is teaching group work and social work ethics. Her academic and research interest focus on human rights education, human rights, social justice, social work education, social development and homelessness. She has a passion and vision for the development and promotion of social work education in Africa. She has completed her doctoral study titled “Exploring human rights education at schools of social work in Southern and East Africa” during 2020. She has also published on this topic. From June 2018 until September 2023 Corlie has been serving as the treasurer of the Association of Schools of Social Work in Africa (ASSWA) and has been standing in as treasurer since January 2024 as the position has not been filled yet. Currently she is serving as the president of ASSWA. She has been on the executive committee of the University and College Consortium for Human Rights Education (UCCHRE) since 2019. Presently she is leading an international comparative research study involving nine universities across Africa, Europe and Australia on exploring students’ experiences of human rights education in social work as she has a passion of advancing human rights in social work education.
